Squirrels

Squirrels usually produce two litters of babies per year – in spring and late summer. Sometimes baby squirrels are found near a nest that has fallen from a tree, or are just found alone on the ground. Depending on the circumstances, the babies may be fat and healthy, they may be newly separated from mom, or they may have been alone for awhile.

If the squirrels run up to you and try to climb up your pant legs and follow you around, that is a clear indication that they have been alone for awhile. Call us. If we are not available, please put on gloves and carefully place the babies in a box with fleece. If you have a heating pad, place a heating pad on low under half of the box. Do NOT offer the babies food or water. At this point they are likely close to emaciation and they must be properly warmed, hydrated, and reintroduced to food.

Younger babies that have been separated from their parents are likely to remain in one place on the ground and not move very far. In this instance, the first thing we want to do is to try to reunite them with mom. You can place them in a shallow box on top of some fleece and leave them where you found them. Place your phone or speaker on the ground next to the baby squirrels and play these baby squirrel sounds. Watch the squirrels for about an hour to an hour and a half to see if mom returns for them. Keep pets and kids away so that mom can return for the babies. If she does not return, call us. If it is after hours, don’t leave the babies out overnight. Bring them inside, place them in a box with fleece so they can stay warm, and place a heating pad under the box and set on low. Do not offer them food or water, just make sure to keep them warm.
