A glimpse of our daily work – saving a long-tailed weasel

We had a call at the end of July about a long-tailed weasel that was tied up in some mesh fencing. The family was able to untie it from some of the mesh, but the weasel was very feisty and they could not free its neck. We asked them to cut the weasel from the fence itself and to bring it to us so that we could see what we could do.

In the photo you can see the weasel at the bottom of the bucket that they brought him in. You can clearly see that the weasel has mesh tied all around its neck.

It took some patience and a steady hand, but we are happy to report that we were able to free the weasel. You can see him standing on top of one of our carriers, resting from his ordeal! This was a long process with this feisty guy, and the mesh was wound pretty tightly around his neck, but he came out of the process in great health!

After letting the weasel rest for a bit, we returned him to where it was found. (The family made it their mission to remove any fencing that could possibly catch an animal in the future – thanks to their quick action, this guy was able to return home with no injuries.)

This is the type of work we have been doing for 16 years, and hope to continue for many years to come! To help us celebrate our work on behalf of the Northland’s wildlife, we invite you to join us  us at our Sweet 16 on September 11! Click here for more information.
